Gegründet 1997 von ehemaligen Looking Glass-Mitarbeitern Jonathon Chey, Rob Fermier und Ken Levine mit Sitz in Boston/Massachusetts.
- Nach Fertigstellung von "System Shock 2" ging Jonathon Chey nach Australien und gründete dort die australische Niederlassung
- Anfang Januar 2006 von Take 2 Interactive aufgekauft und übernommen.
- Anfang August 2007 im Rahmen der Unternehmenseingliederung in die 2K Games-Sparte in 2K Boston umbenannt.
- Anfang Januar 2010 wurde 2K Boston wieder unter dem alten Namen Irrational Games aktiv. Die erneute Umbenennung in Irrational Games kam aufgrund des Markennamens zustande und soll gleichzeitig ein Zugeständnis an die Fans des Studios sein.
- im Februar 2017 in Ghost Story umbenannt
